This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but beneath Together lies a intense meditation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when the couple relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
